Situated in The Upper Valley, the Kimball Union cross country team has access to its own beautiful and extensive trail network as well as several beautiful trail systems in the surrounding area. The cross country team seeks to create a dynamic and inclusive team culture that promotes a love for running and competition. Coaches encourage student-athletes to develop and reflect on their goals while celebrating their progress throughout the season.
A typical training week for the cross country team involves trail runs, a few speed and strength-based running workouts, and two strength training circuits. A focus of the cross country team is to help our runners work on efficient and proper running form, so the team often begins practice with a series of dynamic stretches and running form drills.
The cross country team competes against other Lakes Region Schools, ending the regular season with the Lakes Region Championship early in November. Following the Lakes Region Championships, Kimball Union Academy competes in the NEPSTA Championships against a broader range of independent schools.
The Wildcats raced on their home course at KUA on Wednesday, October 21st, under bright, sunny skies. We are so grateful to all the parents, faculty, students and supporters who came out to cheer on our students!
All ten Wildcats were present and they all ran well.
The girls’ race produced another moment to remember on the KUA home course: Caroline won the race!! She paced herself smartly from the start, running an intelligent race before unleashing a powerful kick down the home stretch. Gwen turned in a terrific performance of her own, breaking the 30-minute mark, a real milestone, and her fierce finishing sprint was on display once again. Claire wasn’t feeling her best but showed up, running a gritty, determined race. Sophie also put together a strong, solid effort.
The boys matched that energy on the home course. Luke led the way with an 8th-place finish in a field of more than 70 runners. Michael covered the course about two minutes faster than he did last year, a remarkable improvement. Keitaro and Jeffrey both ran great races, and Jeffrey continues to get better with every week. Cyrus and Wonjun rounded out the team with steady, dependable efforts. Congratulations to all ten of our runners on a memorable day at home!
The Wildcats traveled to Proctor Academy on Wednesday, October 14th. The day was cloudy but dry, which was still a great day for our runners!
The girls came out of the gates with real determination. Caroline ran aggressively through the first mile, holding 6th place, while Claire and Gwen ran side by side, pushing each other through the opening stretch. All three gave everything they had with hard sprints to the finish line.
The boys were just as bold at the starting line. Luke led the charge with a first mile under 6 minutes, and Michael, Keitaro, Jeffrey, and Cyrus all attacked the early pace as well. Michael took a tumble along the way, but he bounced right back up and finished the race strong. He has demonstrated resilience throughout the season and today was no different!
Great job to all eight runners on a gutsy day at Proctor! The Wildcats are looking forward to racing at home next week at KUA!
