You are an artist.

KUA opens opportunities for you to share your vision and tap into your creativity. You'll find a grounding in aesthetics, history, and criticism, and a chance to discover your unique voice. Regardless of your previous level of engagement, you’ll find a robust arts experience and immersive programming led by KUA’s exceptional faculty who are also practicing artists.

Our artists find a home in the expansive Flickinger Arts Center. You'll also benefit from our proximity to the rich cultural resources of Dartmouth College's Hood Museum of Art and Hopkins Center for Performing Arts, as well as Northern Stage. Our visiting artists program exposes students to working professionals.

While we require that every student fulfill visual and performing art requirements, most students explore the arts through afternoon activities and participation in ensemble groups. Our schedule is designed so you will never have to choose between the arts or another activity, like athletics.

    Flick Gig

Empire Wild is a genre-bending, crossover trio founded by Ken Kubota, Brandon Ilaw, and Mitch Lyon. Ken and Mitch bring all the cello has to offer - bowed, plucked, chopped and more. Brandon can be found singing and playing anything he can get his hands on – often a cajon, sometimes a guitar or piano, maybe some ankle bells. All classically trained, the three musicians met at Juilliard and formed Empire Wild as a vehicle for their love of musical exploration - fusing the sounds of pop, folk, Broadway and more into their songwriting and composition. Their debut EP ‘Paper Seasons’ features all original songs, highlighting the trio’s unique sound and instrumentation. Based in NYC, they have brought their signature mix of original music, inventive covers and twists on the classical canon to audiences across the country.

Taylor Gallery Opening: Wendy Briggs Powell

Wendy Briggs Powell: Watermarks and Threads
Gallery Opening on Friday, January 7 from 5:30-7:00 in Taylor Gallery.
Powell's work will be on display through February.

After many years of doing more traditional graphic design work, I went back to school and earned my Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2015. It was there that I found the freedom to explore working with my hands while engaging with the fundamentals of design. My watermarks evolved as a reaction against the sterile environment of the computer screen and the expectations of perfection that are a part of creating with today’s technology. I needed a more sensual process of working—one that connected my heart, head, and hands, while also serving as a method for expressing my lived experience.
In making watermarks, I submerge large sheets of paper into various sized and shaped containers of dyed water. The process flows organically as a conversation with both the materials and the elements of design (color, form, line, space, size), where my hand is guiding and allowing, but it’s the water that leaves the mark. This imperfect and unpredictable process allows for surprises and is a practice in giving up control and working with the way things are.  For me, the marks become visual representations of a felt experience; and also a bit like a Rorschach test because they can be many different things to the viewer.

    Artist Statement
Intrinsically, I am a visual artist. I am passionate about the subtleties of color and details. This refined way of seeing, I credit to years of looking through my beloved camera, walking the earth with a few thousand rolls of film. The results: observation, exploration, abstraction and editing. As a painter, conceptually, I see from my soul. I find myself expressing and making art as if from latent seeds somewhere within me. Often, I paint what I do not photograph and I photograph what I do not paint.
