The Junior Varsity teams at Kimball Union Academy are dedicated to teaching fundamental skills, fostering athletic growth, and creating the foundation for future success as Wildcat student-athletes. Focused on development, these teams provide an inclusive and supportive environment for players to improve their abilities, build confidence, and gain valuable game experience.
Coaches emphasize skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship, ensuring that every player grows both on and off the field, ice, court, or track. With KUA's #1 goalie, Julia Fontaine out for their re-match against NMH, KUA was not sure what kind of improvements they would show against a team that beat them handedly earlier in the season. Senior Rose Abendroth, however, stepped up to the crease. Although, KUA would miss her from the defensive line-up, they were thrilled to have an experienced netminder between the pipes. The school bus ride to Massachussets provided ample time to mentally prepare for the game, and when the puck dropped, the cats were ready. Multiple chances at both ends of the ice provided an exciting game for spectators. KUA looked sharp. A tough bounce granted NMH a short breakaway, and she capitalized on the opportunity. Minutes later, a puck rung both posts and found its' way over the goal line to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hoggers. Although, the next two periods provided many opportunities for KUA, luck was not on their side. Final score was 4-0 against a team that had beat them 6-1 earlier in the season. Just two games left in the season, and KUA is on the hunt for another W.
Wednesday provided one of the best hockey games we have seen out of the KUA Girls JV squad. Back and forth action for the full 45 minutes. What stood out more than anything was great goaltending at both ends. Fontaine stood on her head for most of the game, smothering rebound after rebound. KUA played well defensively, and often sustained pressure offensively, but could not catch a break in front of the net. Huge improvements were seen since the first game against Proctor this season. Onwards to a road game on Saturday vs. NMH.
A chilly Saturday afternoon did not scare fans away from celebrating the five seniors on the KUA JV girls hockey squad. Rose Abendroth, Jamie Johnson, Eleanor Pschirrer-West, Karina Meirmanova, and Sam Vocatura were all honored before the game, and all 5 started. It was an atypical slow start for the Wildcats. The energy was not the same as games in the past. This did not stand in the way, however, of some great hockey. Johnson was first to put one on the scoreboard after Halle Clark made a great play on the blue line and assisted the goal. Clark later followed up with a breakaway and found goal #2. Only 20 seconds later Charlotte Hankin rifled one low on net before the goalie had time to react, and made the game 3-0 at the end of the 1st. The great team play between Clark and Johnson continued with Clark scoring again after a 2 on 1, and Johnson earning the assist. A too many men call against the Wildcats put them on the penalty kill for a minute and a half. In that time VA was able to capitalize scoring their one and only for the game. Final score after 3 periods of play was 6-1. Another great game for the entire team, and especially the seniors! KUA looks to face the Faculty in a scrimmage this Monday, and then a re-match with Proctor at home on Wednesday.
