Wildcats Beat Bulls in Close Contest

Kimball Union 2, Holderness 1

The Kimball Union boys’ varsity hockey team earned a 2-1 win over the Holderness Bulls at Holderness on Friday, on the strength of some timely goaltending, net-front traffic, and a shorthanded goal. Despite the Wildcats dominating the play for much of the first period, Holderness was able to escape with a 0-0 tie thanks to some strong play from its goaltender. In the second, with KUA on the penalty kill, a trio of seniors connected to give the Wildcats the lead. A great defensive play by senior Alex Heinritz led to Sean Thomson setting Mike Lombardi with a great pass to the back door. Lombardi directed the puck into the Holderness net to give KUA the 1-0 advantage. However, minutes later Holderness evened the score on a back door play of their own. Knotted at 1-1 in the third, KUA senior Paul McAuliffe rolled up the wall in the Holderness zone, took the puck to the middle of the ice and fired a shot through junior Thomas Samuelsen’s screen of the Holderness goalie. The goal proved to be the winner as KUA junior goalie Hugo Turcotte made many strong saves to preserve the win.
