Senior Trio Leads KUA to Win

Kimball Union 4, Northfield-Mount Hermon 1

On the backs of a strong game from a line of senior forwards, the Kimball Union Academy boys’ varsity hockey team scored a 4-1 win at Northfield-Mount Hermon on Wednesday. After a scoreless first period, KUA’s line of Roope Hirvonen (1G, 1A), Bobby Young (2G), and Mike Lombardi (1G, 1A) cashed in on a powerplay early in the second when sophomore Jordan Harris’s shot though Young’s screen rebounded to Lombardi, who tucked the puck in for the 1-0 lead. Later in the period, while killing a penalty, Hirvonen was credited with a shorthanded goal after the NMH goalie inadvertently shot the puck into his own net in response to Young’s forecheck. NMH got one goal back on a nice deflection late in the second period to make the game 2-1 heading into the third. KUA controlled the bulk of the play in the third but it took a key breakaway save from junior goalie Sean Dynan to preserve the lead. Seconds later, Young cashed in with a shot to the top corner off a nice feed from Lombardi to restore the two-goal lead. Young added another goal on the next shift, this time on a setup from Hirvonen, to round out the scoring.
