Potent Powerplay Carries KUA to Victory over Tilton

The Kimball Union Academy boys’ varsity hockey team used four powerplay goals to carry it to a 4-3 road victory over Tilton on Friday night. KUA got on board twice in the first period, both on the powerplay. On the first goal, senior Bobby Young made a great play to dish the puck to fellow senior Roope Hirvonen who deposited a shot just under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, also on the powerplay, senior Paul McAuliffe scored on wrist shot that found its way over the Tilton goalie’s shoulder. KUA junior goalie Hugo Turcotte made some big saves in the first period to allow KUA to enter the second up by two. Tilton cut the lead in half on a powerplay of its own, but a third powerplay goal by KUA, this time by senior Alex Heinritz, restored the two-goal lead entering the third period. Tilton battled hard and scored early in the third and was able to tie the game at three with just a few minutes remaining. However, in the final minute, with KUA on the powerplay, Young scored the game winner as he buried a rebound off a shot from senior Sean Thomson. From there KUA kept Tilton at bay to secure the win.
