The Kimball Union boys’ varsity hockey team had a strong start to the 2016 Flood-Marr Tournament by beating a strong Salisbury team 4-2 on Friday morning. Senior Mike Lombardi broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period with a spectacular individual effort that saw him beat both a Salisbury defender and the goaltender one-on-one before tucking the puck into the net. Sophomore forward Logan Cash extended the lead minutes later with a quick shot on the rush off a nice feed from fellow sophomore Arlo Merritt. Salisbury added an extra-attacker goal to make the score 3-2 late but Lombardi sealed the win with an empty-net goal following a key shot block from senior Kyle Shero with 30 seconds left. Junior Thomas Samuelsen scored the first KUA goal on the power play in the first period while junior defenseman Bryce Dolan added three assists. Goalie Sean Dynan was strong in the KUA net and made 28 saves, including a key save on a point-blank Salisbury chance in the second period to keep the score tied at one.
