Fit, Technical HHS Overwhelm Wildcats in Season Opener
While the Wildcats scored an A+ for effort, on this day a fit and technical Hanover High School team proved too much for the young Meriden squad. A lovely if not a tad chilly early autumn (late summer?) afternoon found KUA playing an experienced and seasoned HHS team on a 120x80, unmowed field. While not a recipe for disaster, this was clearly going to be a tough game. And while a heroic effort from Junior GK Rose Abendroth kept the score close throughout, even 20+ saves could not keep Hanover from eventually breaking through. The game was not without its positives for the Wildcats!! Freshman Maddie Long, playing her first game as a central defender, played the position with skill and great tenacity. Long's continuous pressure on Hanover's central attacking players helped stem the attack from this strong side, and her athletic play proved invaluable in keeping the Marauders at bay during several moments in the second half; Left Back Lindsay Peckham was relentless in her efforts toward thwarting Hanover's designs on the Cats' net, and junior sweeper and captain Lexi Uryase grew increasingly comfortable throughout the fixture and settled into playing a terrific game in the back. While the result did not come the Wildcats' way, there is an abundance of optimism in Meriden and for this young and talented team!!!
