Student Artists Recognized with ‘Triple Crown’ of Awards
March has proven to be a rewarding month for Kimball Union Academy’s arts program as more than a dozen students earned local, state, or national recognition for their work.
Topping the list of honorees are Lucy ’28 and Tougy ’26 whose pieces were accepted into the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) K-12 Exhibition to be held later this month in Detroit. This marks the 10th time pieces created on The Hilltop will be featured in the prestigious showcase.
On the state level, Sophie ’28 was one of five artists to earn Best in Show honors at the annual New Hampshire Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, with her ceramic creation being selected from a field of more than 1,000 entries. In all, KUA saw five students in Sophie, Tougy, Iris ’27, Lili ’26, and Aerin ’27 recognized as Gold Key winners — the event’s top designation.
Finally, at the annual AVA Gallery and Art Center’s annual awards Iris’s piece, titled “Just Along for the Ride,” earned the Best in Ceramics designation.
“It feels like a bit of a triple crown for our students,” Ceramics Teacher and Director of the Taylor Gallery Ursula Fries-Herfort P’14, ’17 said. “While we emphasize process in the arts, it is very rewarding to witness these students’ skills blossom and be channeled into these outstanding pieces. I’m very happy and proud for them to have received these outside recognitions and can’t wait to see what else they will create.”
