Beat-the-Heat Tips from KUA’s Director of Sports Medicine

As summer temperatures soar, staying safe during outdoor workouts just got harder. If you're looking to navigate the heat safely, Director of Sports Medicine Scott Roy, offers a guide to training in extreme conditions.
"Exercising in high heat and humidity places immense stress on the cardiovascular system," says Roy. "By making a few strategic adjustments to your routine, you can maintain your fitness without compromising your health."
Here are nine expert tips to keep you safe, hydrated, and performing at your best:

  • Hydrate in Advance: Don't wait until you're sweating to start drinking water. Focus on heavy hydration the day prior to a tough workout, as well as throughout the day itself.
  • Replace Electrolytes: Plain water isn't always enough. When available, use electrolyte supplements to fully replace the vital minerals lost through sweat losses.
  • Cut the Volume: When the heat index spikes, less is more. Reduce your workout volume or duration by as much as 50% to prevent overexertion.
  • Seek the Shade: Take more frequent hydration breaks than usual, and make sure you are resting in the shade whenever possible to let your core temperature drop.
  • Shift Your Schedule: If you have the flexibility, move your workouts to the cooler parts of the day—either early morning or later in the evening.
  • Head Indoors: When conditions become truly oppressive, move your workouts indoors to climate-controlled environments.
  • Pivot to Recovery: Use the weather to your advantage. Consider reserving the hottest days of the week for lower-intensity "recovery" sessions rather than heavy push days.
  • Monitor Your Heart Rate: Use a smartwatch, biometric ring, or chest-style heart rate monitor to keep an eye on your biometrics. If you notice your heart rate spiking into peak zones faster than usual, back off the intensity immediately.
  • Don't Forget Sunscreen: If you must train during mid-day outdoor hours, always wear sunscreen.
By listening to your body and implementing these professional strategies, you can smash your fitness goals safely all summer long.
