    Ceramics

Work with your hands, feel the smoothness of clay, create functional pieces that you can use daily - KUA’s ceramics program invites students to explore all aspects of clay work. A well-equipped studio provides all the tools needed to learn a new craft or take it to the next level. Whether through a class during the academic day, or pottery activity after school, students find a space to explore and thrive on the joys of working with clay.
  • A student solders a piece of jewelry in Kimball Union's jewelry class.

    Jewelry

KUA's modern jewelry studio allows students to get involved in a wide variety of metal-smithing activities. Soldering stations, ample tools, and an inspirational atmosphere encourage students to bring their designs and ideas to life.
  • A student in Kimball Union's woodworking class uses a saw during a project.

    Woodworking

Open to both the novice and the more experienced student, woodworking is taught to inspire both individual exploration and collaborative expression. Students learn the basics of joinery and the appreciation of fundamental woodworking techniques through a series of assigned projects and are free to design pieces of furniture based on traditional models or create something totally unique. Topics include care and use of hand tools, shop safety, and an introduction to power equipment.

Two-Dimensional and Time-Based Media

KUA offers a full slate of two-dimensional and time-based media classes from traditional painting and drawing, to computer-aided design, photography, and video. Students can begin at the introductory level and hone their craft as far as they can imagine, ultimately developing their own portfolio in AP Studio Art.

Our hands-on, student-centric classes are mentored by expert working artists. Students learn the joy of creating and develop a critical eye that enables them to discover their own artistic expression in a collaborative learning environment.

Trimester-length Painting and Drawing are the gateways to higher-level year-long Advanced Studio Art classes. Classes begin to train the eye to see clearly, the hand to render articulately, and the mind to engage creatively. Students learn about color and form, and the two visual studios offer a change of pace from a hectic day.

The well-equipped tech lab houses our time-based media classes like Digital Photo and Digital Computer. We also offer 2-Dimensional design where students explore topics like graphic, fashion, and interior design.
