Dance is an exceptionally strong program at KUA, offering both remarkable depth of training and opportunities for all abilities. Dancing at Kimball Union is serious fun, and engages the novice as well as the advanced student in the act of creation. Students learn about their instrument - the human body - through a wide range of dance techniques and use the creative process to help them explore and discover meaning and artistry. Unique “extras” such as yoga and contact improvisation are woven into the fabric of dance at KUA, helping students fully express themselves as their bodies and spirits are well trained. Additionally, trips are offered to exciting dance performances in venues ranging from Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center to New York City’s theatres.

Classes: All courses taught within the academic day require students to study both dance technique and composition, as the two go hand in hand. Once again, it is our expectation that students immediately begin to flex their personal creative muscles, generating material that is, more often than not, shared with the community in fully lit and costumed stage productions. More advanced students will be asked to conceptualize, visualize, create and perform their own complete solo or group pieces. Novices can start with Dance I and continue to feed their passion through Composition and History and Advanced Dance.
Dance Activity: occurs in the afternoon, during a time slot shared with sports as well as other activities. It is offered every trimester, producing material for dance and music concerts fall and spring, and working with the winter musical second trimester. All three performances play to packed houses, which is a testament to both the supportive nature of the KUA community, and to the level of work it has come to expect in the performing arts.
Facilities: The program's home is the well appointed dance studio with sprung wood floors. Performances are on the main stage of the Flickinger Arts Center auditorium. Students working in the program are frequently granted evening access to facilities where they can be found polishing their creations and enjoying each other’s company. In short, students are treated like young professionals, and then they act like them.
