KUA Anthropology Classes Visited by Homeless Activist Matthew Works
On December 18 Matthew Works, an artist, writer, but more importantly, a homeless activist, came to visit the anthropology classes at KUA. This is the second year that Matthew has visited classes and discussed the issues of the homeless and the increasing numbers of people out on the street. Addressing the challenges that the homeless face and the stereotypes that they endure of being lazy or shiftless, Matthew stands in stark contrast to those attitudes. Students are exposed to the question of homeless versus houseless. This was the start of a new topic for the winter in anthropology, marginality in society, which includes reading The Mole People about the underground communities in Grand Central Station and Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa concerning Vietnam vets who have created their own society in the desert of New Mexico. -- Lyn Lord, History Department Chair
