Boy's JV Hockey Opens Up With a Win Against Brewster

Corson Fidler
KUA braved the first snowfall of the year as they travelled 2 hours each way to play against Brewster.  For their first game of the season, KUA put together a great performance as they got the better of a solid Brewster team by a final score of 4-2.  The coaches were particularly proud of KUA's composure as they only took 2 penalties on the game compared to Brewster's 8.

Peter Young got things started for the Wildcats in the 1st period as he found twine off of a nice one timer coming from Liam Eldred.  Brewster responded well however as they scored with 1 second left before making ice halfway through the 2nd period.  It turned out that ice was not going to be made, resulting in just as much snow on the ice as there was outside by the end of the game.  Brewster scored again quickly right at the start of the second half of the 2nd period to take the lead 2-1.  KUA struggled to capitalize on many opportunities as they headed into the 3rd period.  KUA found themselves on the better end of a 2 man advantage in the third period and was able to pull the score even as Sam Hermann scored a goal with the assist coming from Michael "Cheese" Maggiore, giving KUA new wind in their sails as momentum began to turn their way.  Just 3 minutes later, Liam Eldred gave a great neutral zone pass to Drew Simoneau, who drove down the left side of the ice and sniped one into the top right corner of the net to give the Wildcats the lead 3-2.  A few minutes later, the co-captains connected again as Hermann scored off an assist from Cheese Maggiore, giving the Wildcats a more stable 4-2 lead.  Play became ferocious for the rest of the game as both teams were playing hard.  KUA called timeout with 4 minutes left in order to settle down as well as get their lineups back together after a confusing series due to a penalty.  Brewster did all they could to score at the end as they pulled the goalie for the extra skater, but KUA's CJ Frates had been up to the challenge all day in just his 5th day as a goalie.

This was a well played game between two good teams that will see each other again later on in the season.  The line of Matt Fiacco, Cheese Maggiore, and Sam Hermann stepped up well especially in the 3rd period as their line went plus 2 on the game.  Liam Eldred had 2 great assists, and Peter Young and Drew Simoneau chipped in with a goal each.  Josh Huett and Tim McNair each played a great game on defense for the Wildcats, and CJ Frates played very well as he made some monumental saves to keep the Wildcats in the game.  KUA will be back in action on Wed. as they travel to St. Paul's School for their 2nd game of the season.
