We are delighted to welcome several new faculty members to The Hilltop for the coming school year who will serve as Head of College Counselling, Admission Office and Basketball Coach, Science Department Chair, and Mathematics Teacher.
Head of College Counselling
Gunnar Olson will be stepping in as the Head of College Counseling for next year. Derek and Whit will be working closely with him in this new configuration of the office. The only other person who will have college counseling responsibilities is John Kluge, who will work with his typical 10 or so AP English seniors.
Gunnar comes to us with many years of college experience working in admissions at both Adelphi University and Kalamazoo College and at the high school level. He has worked in several independent schools, most recently Indian Springs School and Western Reserve Academy. Gunnar will move onto campus with his wife this summer.
Admission Office and Basketball Coach
Cory McClure is joining us as an associate director in the Admission Office and also as KUA’s Boys Varsity Basketball Coach. He has a great track record in Admission having worked over seven years total at New Hampton School, Bridgton Academy, and most recently at Gould Academy. He has also coached many winning basketball teams both at the high school and college levels. He will be moving to campus with his wife and their three children, Max 13, Sylvia 11, and Griffin 9 this summer.
Science Dept. Chair
Jesse Mathers will be joining the KUA faculty next year as the Science Department Chair. She comes to us from The Calverton School, a day school, in Maryland, where she was also the Department Chair. Jesse also taught for two years before that at a boarding school in Pennsylvania. Jesse has spent her last four summers teaching genetics at Johns Hopkin’s summer program, and she holds a Ph.D. in genetics from Penn State University.
Jesse will arrive on campus this summer with her husband, Craig, their three children, Katie, 11, John 9, and Sarah, 7 and their yellow lab, Mist. They all look forward to returning to a close-knit boarding school environment.
Mathematics Teacher
Beth Gilmartin will be joining our mathematics department to teach Multivariable Calculus among other math topics. Beth is a Wellesley grad who spent three years working at the Federal Reserve right out of college. She then turned to teaching, first at Squaw Valley Academy and then this year at Gann Academy. She, too, is looking forward to coming back to a boarding school and hopes that at some point she might also have the opportunity to teach economics which was the focus of her undergraduate degree.
