The Kimball Union boys’ varsity hockey team rebounded from a tough Friday night loss to defeat a strong New Hampton team 4-2 on Saturday in Meriden, NH. KUA got off to a quick start in this one, with sophomore Logan Cash scoring off a rush midway through the first period. Senior Roope Hirvonen doubled the KUA lead minutes later with a seeing-eye wrist shot from the top of the circles that found its way into the New Hampton net. Not long after that, senior Paul McAuliffe scored from the slot to give KUA a 3-0 and chase the New Hampton goalie from the net. New Hampton got one goal back near the end of the first and made it 3-2 in the second. However, some key saves by junior goalie Sean Dynan kept KUA in the lead. In the third period, a great individual rush and shorthanded goal by senior Mike Lombardi, who also had two assists, gave KUA a 4-2 lead, which held up until the end. KUA now heads into the NEPSAC Elite 8 tournament as the #3 seed and will host Thayer Academy on Wednesday in Meriden.
