KUA Doubles Up Stanstead

The Kimball Union boys’ varsity hockey team played its third game in four days and came away victorious in a 4-2 decision over Stanstead College of Quebec on Saturday in Meriden. Stanstead struck first in the game when one of its players snuck behind the Wildcats’ defense and collected a loose puck and beat KUA junior goalie Hugo Turcotte with a nice move. However, KUA answered quickly with goals from seniors J.D. Caras and Roope Hirvonen to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room after one period. In the second period, KUA added to the lead on a goal by junior Andranik Armstrong. Stanstead pressured hard in the third period and scored early, cutting the KUA lead to 3-2. However, a huge save by Turcotte on Stanstead breakaway shortly afterward helped lead to KUA’s fourth goal, as the puck eventually worked its way to senior Mike Lombardi whose shot from the wing eluded the Stanstead netminder and restored KUA’s two-goal lead. Turcotte made several more strong stops in the third as Stanstead pressed for another, but the Wildcats held on for the victory. KUA’s record now stands at 21-3-1 on the year.
