KUA Skates to Tie With Deerfield

Kimball Union 1, Deerfield 1

The Kimball Union Academy boys’ varsity hockey team skated to an exciting 1-1 tie Wednesday at Deerfield. The Wildcats came out of the gates hard and put the pressure Deerfield’s defense from the start. However, Deerfield hung on and had some chances of its own, but KUA junior goalie Hugo Turcotte was up to the task and made some big saves early in the game. Midway through the first period, Deerfield scored the game’s first goal off a rebound in the slot. KUA kept pressing, but couldn’t find the net in the first period. In the second period, KUA outchanced Deerfield by a wide margin but could not beat a strong goaltender and Deerfield entered the third with its 1-0 advantage. However, some strong work early in the third from the line of James Caras, Arlo Merritt, and Seth Stadheim drew a Deerfield penalty and senior Roope Hirvonen capitalized on the powerplay with a goal from the slot. KUA continued to take the play to Deerfield but could not manage to put one past the Deerfield goalie the rest of the period or overtime.
