The Kimball Union Girl's Varsity Soccer program has established itself as a formidable force within the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) competition. Their unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence have yielded admirable results over the past decade. From 2011 to 2015, they consistently advanced to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, showcasing their tenacity and skill on the field. However, their crowning achievement came in 2016 when they emerged triumphant as the NEPSAC Class C Champions, etching their name in the annals of the school's athletic history. Undeterred by their success, the team continued to demonstrate their prowess, securing semifinal berths in both the 2017 and 2018 New England Class C tournaments, solidifying their status as a perennial powerhouse in the region.
In 2024, the team will be led by Lucas Richardson, a career educator who currently serves on the leadership team of Soccer Without Borders, an award-winning sports-based youth development organization. Coach Richardson most recently served as head girls' soccer coach at Kent Denver, where he guided the team to an undefeated, championship-winning season and was selected as the Colorado High School 3A Coach of the Year. A former Dartmouth soccer player, Coach Richardson got his start as a coach in the Upper Valley and is excited to be returning to the area with his wife and four young children.
Coach Doherty is the former men's head coach at Colgate University. During his 20 years as head coach, Mike was named the Lanzera National Coach of the Year, the Patriot League Coach of the Year, and earned two NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year honors. He also captured two Howard Hartman Awards as Colgate's coach of the year. Mike coached an All-American, nine first-team all-region players, 28 first-team all-Patriot League selections, and one Patriot League Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, two Rookies of the Year, and two tournament MVPs. As the former Managing Director of the Lightning Soccer Club, Mike helped build the club to compete at the state and regional levels in numbers not seen before by the club, sending two teams to the Region 1 Championships.
A native of New Hampshire, Murray grew up in the Upper Connecticut Valley and also in the seacoast area. Since attending Amherst College, where he majored in natural sciences, he has devoted his professional life to teaching science—first at Nature’s Classroom, a nonprofit organization with a mission to raise schoolchildren’s environmental awareness and appreciation, and later at Barlow School, Kildonan School, and Cambridge School of Weston before joining Kimball Union Academy in 1988. Murray’s first role at KUA was split between serving as director of buildings and grounds and teaching mathematics. He has also been a long-standing coach of the varsity girls’ soccer squad. Currently, he teaches physics and applies his leadership skills as the Science Department chair. When school is not in session, Murray enjoys fishing, golfing, and carpentry. He lives on campus in Frost House with his wife, Director of Studies Cynthia Howe, and their two sons, Tyler ’06 and Morgan.
Abbey Hybl scored two first half goals to lead KUA to a 5 -1 victory over visiting Vermont Academy. Shannon Doherty added a first half goal with just 47 seconds remaining in the half. Michaela Igo and Maddy Kenyon also scored KUA. Assist went to Shannon Doherty (2), Abbey Hybl (2) and Rebecca DeTurk. KUA out shot Vermont Academy 21 - 9 and had a 6-1 advantage in corners. KUA's record is 8-7-1 on the year.
KUA scores 2 in the second half to win over Cushing
Two early second half goals were enough to lead KUA to a 2 - 0 victory over visiting Cushing Academy. Just six minutes into the second half, Rebecca DeTurk started the scoring on a perfect shot placed just inside the right post from 16 yards out with the assist going to Maddy Kenyon. Less than 2 minutes later, Kenyon scored again for KUA, set up by forward Shannon Doherty. KUA out shot Cushing 15 - 9 and held a 4 - 1 edge in corners. Midfielders Hannah Schafer and Caro Longpre had solid games for KUA, and goalkeeper Emily Kelly recorded the shutout.
Kimball Union Academy went on the road and defeated Holderness 1 - 0 on a first half goal by freshman Morgan Walsh. Rebecca Deturk assisted on the strike, playing a through ball behind the Holderness defenders. Goalkeeper Emily kelly recorded the shutout, stopping a penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half. Defenders Kaitie Sanders and Maddie Fernsell had outstanding games for KUA. Holderness held a 16 - 8 advantage in shots and KUA had 2 - 1 edge in corners. KUA next hosts New Hampton on Saturday 11/6 @ 3:00pm.
