The Kimball Union Girl's Varsity Soccer program has established itself as a formidable force within the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) competition. Their unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence have yielded admirable results over the past decade. From 2011 to 2015, they consistently advanced to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, showcasing their tenacity and skill on the field. However, their crowning achievement came in 2016 when they emerged triumphant as the NEPSAC Class C Champions, etching their name in the annals of the school's athletic history. Undeterred by their success, the team continued to demonstrate their prowess, securing semifinal berths in both the 2017 and 2018 New England Class C tournaments, solidifying their status as a perennial powerhouse in the region.
In 2024, the team will be led by Lucas Richardson, a career educator who currently serves on the leadership team of Soccer Without Borders, an award-winning sports-based youth development organization. Coach Richardson most recently served as head girls' soccer coach at Kent Denver, where he guided the team to an undefeated, championship-winning season and was selected as the Colorado High School 3A Coach of the Year. A former Dartmouth soccer player, Coach Richardson got his start as a coach in the Upper Valley and is excited to be returning to the area with his wife and four young children.
KUA Girls Soccer team in their pink "playing for a cure" game shirts took on Holderness today and came out with an exciting 2-1 victory. In the fourth minute Chelsea Kantola struck a long ball forward hitting Maddy Kenyon in stride as she broke through Holderness' defense. Maddy Kenyon put KUA on the board by striking a left-footed shot neatly into the corner netting. From that point the game turned into a defensive battle. KUA surged forward often just missing quality scoring opportunities. Charlotte Herbert hit the crossbar. Maddy Kenyon had two more great chances in the first half hitting near post and then five minutes left in the half driving a second shot off the crossbar. The second half started and KUA continued to push forward. Rebeka Spencer's run up the left side ended in a shot off the post. Maddy Kenyon did a nice job creating space to get her shot off all game long but again was thwarted twice hitting the post on both attempts. The momentum of the game started to shift as Holderness started to combine passes in the middle of the field and hitting forwards with dangerous through passes. Tori Agel and Maddie Fernsell covered the back well, running down numerous balls and clearing them decisively. In the 70th minute Holderness finally struck the equalizer on a cross that got behind the defense to a streaking wing who drove the ball past KUA's goalie Lauren Fischelis. As they had all game long both teams pushed to create chances to put in the game winner. In a quality run forward that reflected her efforts for the whole game Lauren Borislow gathered in a pass from Caysea Benner, eluded two defenders on her way into the box,and calmly drilled the game winner into the net. Holderness, determined to strike back in the final minute pushed forward and swarmed the goal area on a corner kick that was headed out by Borislow as time ran out. Today's match was the final home game for seven seniors: Borislow, Kantola, Fischelis, Agel, Benner, Taylor Johnston, and Sadie Thompson. The KUA team certainly put on an entertaining show for the home crowd on this day, special in many ways. KUA travels to New Hampton on Saturday.
Two early goals spell defeat for KUA as they go down 2-0 vs Cushing
KUA Girls Soccer team travelled to Cushing to take on a talented and athletic opponent in the Penguins. Cushing got off to a strong start, scoring goals at the fifth and the fifteenth minutes to take a 2-0 lead. KUA responded with a few good solid counter attacks but were unable to penetrate Cushing’s back four. Both teams settled in and tightened their defensive screws a bit to limit scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the game. Cushing was able to serve dangerous balls into the area but goalie Emily Kelly was there to knock down any chances for the home team. As a result the game ended 2-0 with KUA on the short end. KUA plays their final game of the season at VermontAcademy on Saturday.
KUA traveled to New Hampton and salvaged a 1-1 tie. New Hampton got on the board first tallying a goal off a direct kick midway through the first half. Ten minutes later Maddy Kenyon crossed the ball to Caysea Benner at the top of the 18 yd box. Caysea then turned on it and buried her shot into the top corner to tie the game up. Caysea had missed on a similar shot earlier hitting the crossbar. The game remained tied through regulation. Late in the game Maddy Kenyon drilled a shot off the crossbar but the rebound was cleared out by New Hampton. As the final minutes ticked down New Hampton's forward broke through the defense and was in alone on goal. Her shot, hit on the ground to the far corner looked to be the game winner but KUA's goalie Lauren Fischelis dove and just parried the ball wide to keep the game tied.
