The KUA Boys Thirds basketball team traveled to Cardigan Mountain School on Saturday, and left with a solid 43 - 33 win. Though leading by only 2 going into the half, KUA played staunch defense during the second half, allowing only 8 more points for Cardigan. Turbo Weitzel capped a very good season with his best performance yet. Turbo netted 24 points, including six three-pointers! He was unstoppable on offense, not only scoring well but controlling the flow of the game. Chibi Ironnah, in his best offensive performance yet, added 6 points, as did Tom Timpone. KUA was aided by strong play from Mickey McDevitt, Anson Poon, and Junil Hwang. In his final game as a KUA basketball player, Kevin Jang played as he has all season, with few mistakes and complete calm on offense. Thirds hoops ended the season at 6-4, having won five of their last seven games. Thanks go to Ben Law, for stellar managing skills, Bill Weitzel, our de facto bus driver, and the Timpones, Sillaris, Estabrooks, McNamaras, and McDevitts who were all super fans!
This past Saturday, KUA Third's basketball hosted Cushing. Down six with a minute to play, KUA put on a heavy, full-court press, which Cushing was unable to handle. Though KUA forced a number of turnovers in a 30 second stretch, they could not convert, and could not quite claw back into the game. The Wildcats never lost heart, and played hard until time expired, losing 29-34. Leading all scorers was Turbo Weitzel, who scored fifteen. Kevin Jang added 5, and Chibi Ironnah scored three and played strong defense throughout. KUA plays their final game of the season on Saturday at Cardigan Mountain.
A long van ride to Cushing Academy looked to be the most difficult opponent KUA would face on Saturday. Twelve minutes into the first half, the Boy's Thirds basketball team trailed 17 - 6, and looked out of sync and sluggish. With a quick burst, including a number of steals and a basket from Kevin Jang, KUA closed to within three at halftime. While the cobwebs were certainly fading away, Cushing started the second half with a run, leaving KUA in the hole by nine points. Behind 23 -14, the rest of the game belonged to the Wildcats. KUA played strong man-to-man defense, and consistently found an open Turbo Weitzel, who netted three 3-pointers in the second half. KUA scored 17 of the game's final 19 points, and escaped with a thrilling victory! Turbo scored a season best nineteen points, including four crucial foul shots during the final minute of play, and Chibi Ironnah dominated defensively and passed the ball like a pro. KUA's next game is home against Putney School this Wednesday.
