Arthur W. Leavitt

LEAVITT, Arthur W. Died peacefully in Kennebunk, ME on September 19, 2017 at age 87. Born and raised in Lynn, MA, he enjoyed lifelong friendships with the "Tower Hill Gang" and his teammates from the legendary Lynn Classical football teams of the 1940's. Art graduated from the University of Vermont where he pursued his love of language and learning while a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After serving in the Air Force, he obtained his Masters degree from Tufts University and embarked upon a 40 year teaching/coaching career (Marblehead High School, Kimball Union Academy, North Yarmouth Academy) during which he instilled his students with a passion for Latin and Greek and inspired track/cross-country athletes: Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster! Higher! Stronger!). Outside of the classroom, Art enjoyed gardening, restoring his antique colonial farmhouse in Ipswich, traveling in pursuit of Odysseus and Aeneas, and spending countless hours exhorting his children while they pursued their academic and athletic dreams. He leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth Burn (Kennebunk, ME), son, Richard (Manchester, MA), daughter, Janet Fenker and her husband, Tom (Santa Cruz, CA), grand-daughters, Lizzie and Gwynne Leavitt, and many great friends, including Fred Smith, Clem Calder, Alan Carlson, and Susan Baker Leavitt.
