Robert Athanas

ATHANAS, Robert P. After a short illness, Robert Athanas, 71, of Swampscott, Boston, Yarmouth Port and Boca Raton, died on November 28th at home surrounded by his 3 brothers and many cousins.

Mr. Athanas was the third son of the late Anthony and Esther Athanas (Mitchell). He continued in his father's tradition, managing Anthony's Pier 4 Restaurants with his brothers. Robert was also a voracious reader and brilliant analyst of news and politics. He was passionate and broadly versed in a variety of subjects. His deep interest in music ranged from his own piano playing to an encyclopedic knowledge of R&B, soul, Broadway music, jazz and pop, particularly Motown. He had traveled the world and seen many of his favorite artists multiple times, to the delight of those artists.

After graduating from Kimball Union Academy and attending the University of Virginia he joined the US Army Reserve and was a key part of the family business. He was very active in Republican politics, attending many national conventions and inaugurations. In all he had met six presidents.

His command of ideas and information went beyond the restaurant business, politics and music. He was interested in everything and had strong opinions about it all, whether it was a question of US Foreign Policy or the plot of a soap opera. He gladly and loudly expressed those opinions articulately and with great wit. His presence, humor and charm will be sorely missed.

Mr. Athanas is survived by his brothers, Anthony Athanas, Jr. and his wife, Maureen (Kennedy) of Boston, Michael Athanas of Marblehead and Paul Athanas and his wife, Jane (Cooper) of Swampscott. Also by his aunts, Theodora Christo (Mitchell) of Lynn and Virginia Haywood (Mitchell) of Topsfield. He leaves behind his first cousins, Karen Ferris (Christo), Barbara Rafuse (Christo), James Christo, Michael Zicko, Loraine Peters, Richard Mahan, Kathy Randele (Mahan), Mary Ann Athanas, Lewis Athanas, Peter Athanas, Jay Rooney, Kate Rooney (Curran), Jeanne Hennessey (Rooney), Tim Rooney, and Michael Watson and many other second and next generation cousins.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, 11:00 A.M. at St. George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral, 523 E. Broadway, South Boston, MA. Visitation will be on Monday 4:00-8:00 in the Solimine Funeral Home, 67 Ocean Street (Rte. 1A) LYNN. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectively invited.
