Boys’ Varsity hockey defeats the Millbrook School 5-4 in overtime in the NEPSAC Quarterfinals.
KUA jumped out to an early lead with goals from Jack McCarthy and Ben Finkelstein respectively. McCarthy banged home a rebound on the power play 5 minutes into the game. Finkelstein received a pass at the point, walked into the slot and fired low stick side 2 minutes later. Millbrook didn’t cave, however, and came roaring back scoring 4 unanswered goals; two in the first period and two early on the second to take a 4-2 lead with less than half of the game left to play. KUA stayed calm, regained their composure and on the power play with less then a minute, Tyler Bird hammered home a rebound for his first of two goals on the day. The period ended 4 to 3 in Millbrooks’ favor. The first half of the third period was back and forth with both teams getting chances on goal, but it was Tyler Bird with 7 minutes left to go in regulation who found the back of the net to tie the game at 4. Regulation ended in a tie and over time was needed to determine a winner. KUA jumped out to a strong start, hitting the post on the first shift of overtime. That shift set the tone as all lines were determined to get that winning goal and be the hero. With 8 minutes left in over time, Billy Young got the puck at the red line, skated into the zone on a two on one with McCarthy. Young shot the puck on net, McCarthy drove the net a hundred miles per hour and banged home the loose puck for his second of the game and the OT winner to put KUA into the NEPSAC semifinals.
KUA will play The Brooks School at KUA on Saturday at 4 for the NEPSAC semifinals.
