Balanced scoring and gritty team defense was the key in a 57-48 victory over a talented Class A NMH squad today in Alumni Gymnasium. The Hoggers came out blazing seemingly knocking down every shot they took forcing the Wildcats to switch to man-to-man defense. Things soon began to swing KUA’s way as Shannon Walsh netted 9 first-half points from varying distances. Co-Captain Gretchen Schissel was also effective on the offensive end hitting both from the floor and the foul line. NMH held a slight 29-27 lead at the break.
Freshman Miranda Judd and Fiekah Fataar ‘13 started strong in the second stanza allowing Kimball Union to regain the lead. Great help defense by all members of the Wildcat squad and key shots by sophomore Jill Clark and senior Becca DeTurk down the stretch held NMH at bay the rest of the way. The Cats dished 13 assists while committing just 8 turnovers in the game. Schissel and Fataar each grabbed 5 rebounds and 3 steals, while Fataar, Judd and Clark dished 3 assists each.
Fataar finished with a game-high 19 points while Walsh was close behind with 15 points and 14 rebounds. KUA improves to 6-4 on the year and is ready for the challenges that lie ahead – 3 games on the road next week (Deerfield, Holderness and Brooks). Go Wildcats!
