KUA went to battle against a high scoring Cushing Academy on Saturday.  Cushing scored 22 goals in their previous game and all indications suggested their offense would be a formidable challenge for any defense. The game started off as expected with both teams scoring early and often. KUA’s Alex Keiver (North Andover, MA) netted three goals to pace the Wildcats in the opening quarter, two of which were assisted by Jon Spencer (Weathersfield, VT). Andrew Jarrett (Weston, MA) also scored his first of three in the opening minutes of the game as well as Ian Timpone (Concord, NH). Cushing scored four of their own to keep Wildcats to a slim one goal lead.
Cushing scored first to even the score in the second quarter, but the Wildcats responded with Jarrett’s second and third goals, both assisted by Spencer, to end the half with a two-goal lead. KUA’s defense was exceptional in the second quarter, giving up no goals while forcing many outside, off-angle shots.  Senior Kevin Vieira (Brookly, NY, Junior Pat Lynch (Tewksbury, MA), and sophomore Trey McDougall (Saratoga Springs, NY) shut down the Cushing attack while Long pole middies Mike Powell (Ridgewood, NJ) and Riley Alderman (Rutland, VT) and short stick middies Karl Menzel (New London, NH) and PJ Tessier (Mirror Lake, NH) put the clamps on Cushing’s potent midfield. In goal, Tim McNair (Wilmette, IL) smothered all the shots he faced.

In the third quarter, the Wildcats continued their domination, building a 12-5 lead, this time with Andrew Cole (Wilmette, IL) hitting twine on three consecutive shots followed by Ryan Lund’s (Anchorage, AK) first goal of the season. Cushing refused to let down, scoring two quick goals to end the third quarter with KUA up 12-7.

In the fourth, Timpone scored and assisted to pace the Wildcats on their way to the final 15-11 victory. Santiago Morales played the second half of the 4th quarter and recorded two saves.

KUA (2-2) plays their Lakes Region season opener at home on Wednesday against New Hampton.
