The girls JV Hockey Team faced Holderness for the second time this season. After beating them 2-0 on their ice, Holderness was determined to avenge the loss. The first period was evenly played. Both teams generated some good opportunities, but no goals were scored. The second period was more of the same until Holderness scored a power play goal to take a 1-0 lead. KUA put on the pressure to even the score before the end of the period, and finally, co-captain Katie Dole fired a bullet of a wrist shot from deep in the zone. Despite having almost no angle, she proved the value of getting the puck on net, as her shot found the the top corner to tie the game before the second intermission. In the third period, KUA moved the puck well and generated some great offensive attacks. With an exceptional display of teamwork, the “Teal line” scored the go-ahead goal. Ali Fernsell won the puck in the neutral zone and made a perfect pass, through traffic to co-captain Erin Mattila, who beat the goalie wide and slipped the puck into the crease where Alison Pollard was ready to put it in the net. Holderness would come back again, though to create a turnover and score on a tough shot from the slot. Kate Dong was injured on the play, but was able to stay in for the little time that remained, and after consulting the trainers at the end of regulation, she went back in for the five-minute overtime. In the extra time, KUA dominated play, hardly letting the puck out of the Holderness zone. Despite many good shots and great offensive efforts, the game remained tied at the end of overtime. The girls look forward to playing Holderness one more time in the last game of the season. But first, they will take on NMH in Akerstrom this weekend.
