KUA improves to 10-3 with a 45-42 victory over the Holderness Blue Bulls today in Alumni Gymnasium. KUA’s pressure defense led to a quick 10-0 lead forcing Holderness to call a time out to regroup. This plan seemed to work well for the visitors as they suddenly went on a 14-4 run of their own to tie the ball game and eventually take a 5 point lead at the break. Holderness maintained the lead until just under 2 minutes remaining in the game. Gabby Diaz cut the lead nailing two freebies followed by Autumn Kariuki who also hit two key free throws to finally give KUA a one-point lead. Holderness had the ball with 26 seconds remaining and forced a shot which senior Bianca Brenz rebounded and got to point guard Diaz. Diaz led the fast break and got the ball back to Brenz who drove the lane and laid in the final basket to give Kimball Union a three point lead for good.
At times KUA moved the ball very well getting everyone involved in the action. Three different players reached double figures with Kariuki leading the way with a game-high 15 points to go along with 15 boards (10 offensive and 5 defensive) followed by Fiekah Fataar (12 points & 10 rebounds) and Brenz with 11 points and 5 caroms. Emily Kelly chipped in with 7 of the team’s 41 rebounds on the game, 2 steals and drew an offensive charge.
