1/8/11 61-31 KUA vs. Vermont Academy Winner: Kimball Union (5-1)
The Lady Wildcats returned to the hardwood after a three week hiatus as they hosted Lakes Region League rival Vermont Academy this afternoon in Alumni Gymnasium. KUA’s full court pressure defense caused problems for the Wildcats from Vermont from the opening tip. Rebecca DeTurk and Gabby Diaz each nabbed several steals in the first stanza. KUA did a good job attacking the hoop, with sophomore Fiekah Fataar and junior Katey Spanos getting to the charity stripe several times. Spanos finished with a team best 4-for-5 from the line while the squad finished 11-for-20 on the day. While 20 shots are good, the Cats will need to improve their FT shooting percentage in order to compete with the tough teams they will face throughout the season.
Gabby Diaz ‘12 played a brilliant game at the point guard position. She hit 4 threes en route to a 22 point performance. She also dished out several assists and grabbed some key rebounds. Rebecca DeTurk led the team in rebounds as she was cleaning up the boards all afternoon. She also chipped in with 4 points. Autumn Kariuki hit for double figures knocking down 5 field goals from the post position. All active KUA players scored in today’s contest.
Kimball Union will travel to Proctor Academy (4-3) on Wednesday for another Lakes Region League rematch. KUA beat PA 43-29 during their first meeting.
