KUA faced off with Class B Middlesex in the championship round of the Berwick Holiday Hoops tournament on Saturday in South Berwick, ME. Both teams started slowly struggling from the floor with KUA leading 11-4 with just under 7 minutes to play. All-Tournament Autumn Kariuki soon got the offense flowing when she scored 8 of the next 10 points to extend Kimball Union's lead. Teammates Gretchen Schissel, Gabby Diaz and Katey Spanos hit 2 buckets a piece to end the half with a 34-11 advantage.
South African Fiekah Fataar was having a monster game with 7 boards in the first half alone but suffered a blow to the nose in the first 30 seconds of the second stanza. Despite playing limited minutes Fataar still finished with 9 rebounds, 9 points, 3 blocks, 3 steals and 1 assist. Freshman Kaitie Sanders, earning her first start, shot an impressive 7-for-8 from the free throw line and finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Katey Spanos (Newport, NH), fresh off a back injury was aggressive going to the basket and chipped in a season-high 11 points including a 5-for-7 foul shooting performance. Gretchen Schissel shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor while forward Rebecca DeTurk led the team in rebounds with 11. Gabby Diaz was named the Tournament MVP for her outstanding play over the two days. She averaged 21 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Diaz also won the 3 point shooting contest.
The Cats, now 4-1, will return to action on January 8th when they host Vermont Academy at 1:30p.m. for a Lakes Region League match-up.
