KUA Travels Down to Rivers for First Game Match-Up

Ashley Johnston

The Wildcats were determined to start the year off strong.  They practiced with intensity and focus over the last couple days and were determined to show their skills.  With 9 new players on the squad this year it was important that KUA get their offense going early.  Rivers controlled the first couple minutes of the 1st period, however KUA quickly took the wind out of their sails with a goal by Kellie Joyce.  Joyce received an indirect pass from Morgan Walsh and Joyce was able to out skate the Rivers defenseman and fake the goalie and drive home a backhand goal.  The first period ended with the Wildcats winning 1-0.  However, Rivers was not ready to back down and came out flying in the 2nd.  Joyce one again defeated their aggression with her own determination as she scored a highlight reel backhand goal top-shelf on the Rivers goalie.  The assist on Joyce’s goal went to Mary Donovan.  However, Rivers bounced back and with just 3 seconds left in the second period were able to score a goal to make it 2-1.  The third period was an intense battle between the Wildcats and Rivers.  Mid-way through the period Rivers was able to drive another goal home off of a rebound.  The last 10 minutes of the third and overtime were back and forth and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.  Kells Casey had 36 saves on the day and was tremendous in goal for the Wildcats.  She was able to keep them in the game at critical times and as a result she received player of the game honors along with Kellie Joyce who had 2 goals on the day.  The Wildcats return to action on Saturday at home as they take on St. Paul’s at 2:30PM.
