Hoggers too Hot to Handle

Eileen Williams

Once again the Lady Wildcats battled back from a half-time deficit to put a scare into its opponent.  Class A Northfield Mount Hermon came to town today to face the short-handed Cats who were down two starters (Bianca Brenz '11 to a torn meniscus and out since January 8th and Tori Agel '10 absent due to illness).  KUA found itself in quite a hole early on and headed into the break behind 29-17.  The Wildcats played inspired basketball in the second stanza behind the hot shooting of Gabby Diaz, the strong all-around play of Autumn Kariuki and the rebounding of Shelby Pillsbury (9 boards).  KUA went on a 10-0 run and brought the score to within 3 points with 4 minutes left to play.  At the 2:12 mark, KUA trailed by four but could get no closer.  Kimball Union was forced to foul with 1:10 left and down 44-48 to get the ball back.  Unfortunately the Hoggers were exceptional from the line sinking 9 of 11 freebies.  Playing catch-up ball, the Wildcats felt the pressure and forced some passes which NMH capitalized on to bring the final score to 59-44.  NMH outscored KUA by just 3 points in the second half.

Gabby Diaz finished with 17 points, 3 steals and 4 assists while Kariuki, playing her best game of the season, chipped in with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Greydy Diaz '10 chipped in with a team-high 5 assists and 8 points.
