There were many heroes in today's 53-42 victory over the visiting Penguins from Cushing. Six
different Wildcats collected 5 or more rebounds with Gabby Diaz and Bianca Brenz gathering
a team-high 8 boards apiece. Greydy Diaz and Shelby Pillsbury proved that playing with heart is
more important than size as they often won the battle against their 6'2" opponent. They
boxed out well and drew several over the back calls against the much taller Cushing players.
Ainsley MacDonald had to leave the game a few times as she was battling the flu, but she refused
to sit out. She sank three huge buckets in the 2nd half to go along with 2 assists and 5 rebounds.
Faith Smith also grabbed 5 boards while working hard to prevent the ball from going into Cushing's
talented center. Smith had some key deflections down the stretch. Jillian Fitzgerald entered
the game with 2 minutes left to go in the first half and KUA down by 1 point. She quickly dished
out two assists and hit a buzzer beater to put the Cats up 23-20 at the break.
Bianca Brenz led the Cats in scoring with 14 points including 5 points in a row within 2 minutes
of entering the game. Brenz also had 3 steals and drew a timely offensive charge on
Cushing's top shooter Katy Breidis. Pillsbury would go on to draw two more charges on Breidis in the
2nd half leading Breidis to foul out of the ball game with 6 minutes remaining. Greydy Diaz netted 11
points despite constant defensive pressure, including a 7-for-8 performance from the foul line.
Freshman Gabby Diaz played beyond her years handling the ball like a pro and dishing out 7 assists.
Tori Agel hit a jumper from the free throw line with time running out on the shot clock to put the Cats
up by 3 with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game.
This win will certainly help KUA's chances for a post-season bid. With just 5 games remaining in the
regular season, KUA must stay on top of their game and continue to play as a team in order to solidify
a trip to the NEPSAC tournament for the 12th straight year.
