Wildcats Avenge Earlier Loss

The KUA Wildcats traveled to Proctor today to take on the 5-1 Hornets in a classic Lakes Region League re-match.  The Hornets won an earlier contest by 6 points and their all-star guard Angelica Pasqual scored 27 points.  This time the focus for KUA was on defense. All eight members of the squad were up for the challenge and each one contributed in a major way to today's victory. Whether is was grabbing a key rebound, nabbing a steal, blocking a shot or setting a strong pick to open up a teammate, the Wildcats did all the little things right.

The team combined for 40 rebounds, 20 of them offensive.  Seven of Tori Agel's game-high 10 rebounds were on the offensive boards.  Bianca Brenz followed suit by grabbing 5 offensive boards.  KUA's passing game improved as well.  They did a great job of swinging the ball and finding the open player.  Gabby Diaz dished out 6 assists with no turnovers and Agel chipped in with 5.  Greydy Diaz and Ainsley MacDonald had 3 assists apiece.

Senior Faith Smith used her long limbs to her advantage and blocked 3 shots while making it difficult for Proctor to get any open looks inside.  She played several valuable minutes and is contributing more and more each game.  Jillian Fitzgerald also came in to the game and grabbed two key boards during an 11-4 run by the Cats in the first half.

Shelby Pillsbury had 6 points and 5 rebounds on the afternoon, with her biggest bucket coming at the 1:55 mark to put KUA up by 2 points (43-41).  Ainsley MacDonald then hit her first jumper of the day after Proctor's Steph Pasqual drove the lane to tie the game back up.  Greydy Diaz  connected on two of her game-high 20 points after Proctor again tied the game with less than a minute to play. Pasqual hit the front end of the one-and-one to bring Proctor within one point (47-46).  KUA called a time-out in an attempt to ice the shooter and it seemed to work as Pasqual missed the second attempt and Agel promptly grabbed the rebound.  Bianca Brenz was later fouled but unfortunatley missed her first foul shot.  Once again Agel secured the rebound.  With :14 left in the game, Brenz was again fouled and went to the line. This time she nailed the first attempt to put KUA up by 2 (48-46).  Proctor had a chance to win the game with 6 seconds left after a controversial call which gave the ball back to PA.  Angelica Pasqual launched a three-point attempt but it fell short.  After a brief scrum, the ball leaked out to another Proctor player who got yet another shot off but this one was too long.  KUA controlled the rebound and held on for the dramatic win.  Agel finshed with a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) while Greydy Diaz played a complete game with 20 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 assists and 2 steals. Angelica Pasqual led the Hornets with 13 points.

KUA improves to 6-4 and will host Class C Ethel Walker on Saturday at 1p.m.
