Freshman Gabby Diaz led the team in three statistical categories yesterday as KUA escaped from Gann Academy with a 55-52 victory. Diaz knocked down 12 points and had 8 steals while dishing out 6 assists against just 2 turnovers in a winning effort.
Each time KUA would start to pull away, Gann would have an answer. Foul trouble plagued the Wildcats in the first half. Kimball Union built a 24-15 lead only to see Gann go on an 11-0 run and close out the half with a 29-28 advantage. Despite playing limited minutes due to foul trouble, Tori Agel had an impressive stat line - 12 points, 2 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Playing extremely well off the bench were Faith Smith (4 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds), Ainsley MacDonald (4 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal) and Jillian Fitzgerald (2 rebounds, 1 steal). All three stepped up defensively while playing many valuable minutes.
KUA built yet another lead in the second stanza. With under 6 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats were up 49-41. However, Gann went on another run and KUA's lead was cut to 1 with just under 6 seconds to play. Bianca Brenz (3-for-4 from downtown) drove the lane and appeared to be fouled, but there was no call. This gave Gann possession and they quickly called a time-out. KUA denied the inbounds pass and Greydy Diaz '10 was able to come up with a huge steal to shut out the hosts. Not quite in the bonus, KUA had to inbound the ball once again. This time Agel was fouled and sent to the foul line where she knocked down both freebies to seal the deal.
Greydy Diaz finished the day with 8 points, 5 assists, 4 boards and 5 steals. The team combined for 20 assists and 28 steals.
KUA looks to keep the momentum going as they travel to Class C rival Proctor Academy for a re-match. Proctor won the first contest by 6 points in Meriden.
