Life Returns to the Hilltop

Kimball Union Academy opened for on-campus learning for the 2020-2021 academic year. Students began a phased return to campus on August 13, and classes and activities resumed August 28. All students were given the opportunity to attend classes in person or through distance learning, creating a hybrid learning model.

The return to campus reflects extensive and thoughtful work conducted throughout the summer by the Emergency Response Team, 13 reopening campus working groups, the continuous monitoring of federal and state guidelines, collaboration with the Northern New England boarding schools, and consultation with medical experts.

KUA made significant investments in professional development, educational technology, and infrastructure and the entire faculty and staff approached the year with an innovative and creative spirit. The Academy’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic prioritizes the health and safety of all and has been met with cooperation, responsibility, and respect.

“Never, never, have I worked with an administration, a faculty, a community that was more committed to the immense amount of work that has been undertaken to allow this moment – right now – and all the great moments to come this year to occur,” said Head of School Tyler Lewis.

The Academy launched a COVID-19 Reporting Dashboard to keep the entire community informed on COVID-19 information and testing. The dashboard also displays the level of alert for our campus using our COVID-19 Condition Levels and Response, a four-tiered color-coded system to indicate the general health conditions of the campus and surrounding community as well as the corresponding response it will take as a community should those conditions change. At present, the alert level is low.

While health and safety protocols have changed many of the day-to-day operations on campus, KUA has preserved the heart of the student experience. Today students enjoy their lunch on newly purchased Adirondack chairs throughout the quad, the theater tech crew is constructing an outdoor stage for the fall production of Tartuffe by Moliere, and the playing fields and mountain biking trails are alive with activity. Stay tuned for the fall issue of Kimball Union Magazine for more details on the safe reopening of KUA.
