The Student Life Office offers insights into recent special programming on campus.
Sophomores Enjoy Comedy AND Learn about Healthy Relationships
KUA parent Cindy Pierce P’20 visited campus and spent time (and great energy!) entertaining and educating our sophomores about sex and healthy relationships. Cindy, a leading social sexuality educator, and comic storyteller has been performing her one-woman comedic show and providing educational programs around healthy sexual behavior and choices since 2004. She has made multiple trips to The Hilltop in recent years and has presented to nearly all of our students at some time during their KUA experience. In an age of ever-changing challenges and mores around relationships, Cindy’s message and impact is always timely and poignant. In a follow-up to Cindy’s presentation, Emily Morazzo from the Turning Points Network, met with the sophomore class and, together with the Student Life Office, to discuss dating habits and ways that victims and bystanders can respond to sexual harassment and assault. The Turning Points Network is a private, non-profit agency offering crisis and support services to female and male survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking. Its services are available to KUA students and their staff works closely with the KUA Health and Wellness team to make sure our students are appropriately supported and informed about their rights and resources.
The Warmth of Community on a Cold Day
For the third time this year, the entire KUA community paused in the middle of their busy day to share a midday meal with one another. All students, faculty, and staff sat together in the Doe Dining Commons for a community lunch. Brenda Porter, a 25-year veteran of the housekeeping staff commented afterward that she looks forward to the meal and really enjoyed the opportunity to sit with a fun group of students and faculty members on this special day. Likewise, senior Bella '20 shared that it was nice to spend her lunch hour with people she often sees and says hi to, but does not know as well as she would like. Bella sat with Kay McCabe, KUA’s long-time dance teacher and enjoyed the opportunity to finally get to know her better.
KUA Leaders and Faculty Reflect on Their Roles and Assumptions
This past Monday evening, the student leadership group met in Hayes Auditorium to reflect on what they do as leaders and how similar or distant this is to what they anticipated or think they should be doing in their various roles. The goal of this activity was to meld the perception and reality of what students actually do in their leadership roles on a day-to-day basis. Feedback from this meeting is being used by the faculty and students alike to align and maximize how we can benefit most from the many roles and opportunities that make it possible for students to impact the community and leave their mark on the school.
