What do you get when you combine a 20-year drought, a corrupt government, a greedy ban on private toilets, and one extremely self-aware musical? You get Urinetown — and Kimball Union Academy is bringing this award-winning, laugh-out-loud satire to the stage later this month.
KUA’s Art Department will present Urinetown on February 26, 27, and 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Flickinger Auditorium. Equal parts hilarious and thought-provoking, Urinetown skewers corporate greed, political apathy, environmental collapse, and—yes—bathroom humor, all while gleefully poking fun at musical theater itself.
Set in a dystopian future where citizens must pay to use public restrooms (and holding it or going in the bushes is illegal), Urinetown follows a cast of unlikely heroes, dastardly villains, a populace desperate for relief, and one all-knowing narrator who insists on mansplaining the rules of musical theater. With toe-tapping songs, sharp wit, and a message that’s surprisingly relevant, the show proves that even the silliest of stories can have something serious to say.
Tickets are free and may be reserved beginning February 9. Seating is general, so audiences are encouraged to arrive early because nothing says “regret” like missing a musical about toilets.
Come for the laughs. Stay for the satire. Leave grateful for indoor plumbing. See you in Urinetown!
