Groundskeeper, Full-Time

Kimball Union Academy (KUA) seeks an experienced Groundskeeper. The Groundskeeper is responsible for independently performing general grounds keeping activities in all weather conditions, while following established guidelines and procedures to keep the campus in a well-groomed condition. The Groundskeeper reports to the Grounds Manager.
 
ABOUT THE POSITION 
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  • Participates in the care and maintenance of grounds using the appropriate equipment.
  • Improves landscape by planting trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs; mowing and trimming lawns; weeding flower beds; removing hazardous tree limbs; pruning shrubs and trees; raking and bagging leaves; cleaning grounds and removing litter; shoveling snow from walks and driveways; spreading salt/sand on public passageways to prevent ice buildup; water lawn and shrubs; paint fences and outbuildings; clean out drainage ditches and culverts.
  • Participate in operations maintaining the athletic fields, the Nordic trail, and the tennis courts.
  • Perform ground maintenance duties, using tractor equipped with attachments, such as mowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, lawn roller, and snow removal equipment.
  • Maintain and repair fences, gates, walls, walkways, tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Notify management of conditions requiring repair by employees or subcontractors.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by manager based on training and capability.
  • Adhering to expectations outlined in the job description and employee handbook.
  • Working in a safe manner at all times, complying with appropriate safety requirements as directed and for the task assigned.
  • Promoting the core values of the F&O department by demonstrating accountability, integrity, discipline, and trust in their work and interactions with the campus community.

QUALIFICATIONS
 

Education and Experience
:  High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required. 1 year of grounds keeping experience is required. A CDL license is preferred but not required.

Skills–
Strong time management skills.
Knowledge - Basic knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices; Working knowledge of soil preparation; Working knowledge of plant diseases and destructive insects.

Abilities
– Ability to follow written and oral instructions, flexibility to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; ability to work with a diversified group of individuals; ability to make independent decisions based on established policies and procedures, ability to work some overtime as assigned by supervisor; ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle and feel objects, tools and controls; frequently required to reach with hands and arms and to squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, reach forward and sit; physical strength needed to lift and carry 80 pounds; ability to adhere to governmental established safety procedures; ability to recognize the presence of plant diseases and destructive insects; ability to maintain and make ordinary repairs to machinery, equipment and small structures; ability to keep simple records; ability to do heavy physical work and to work outdoors for long periods of time in all climatic conditions; ability to follow school policies and support the mission of a high quality seven day a week Boarding School environment.

The employee will adhere to the department dress code including assigned uniforms and proper personal protective equipment.

WORK SHIFT
The work shift for this position is full-time and will be based on the assignment and needs of the Academy.  The workday is an eight-hour shift, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekends for special events.
