Always avant-garde, the Wildcats displayed their own unique fashion sense as they took the field on Family Weekend for their rematch against the Cardigan Mountain Cougars. The team wore their black “play for the cure” jerseys but then solidified the look with neon pink shorts. No words can adequately describe the impact of this wardrobe choice. There was a Soccer game to play, though, and it was a good one. KUA had defeated this Cardigan team several weeks previously, coming from behind in the closing minutes to win, and knew that the Cougars would be determined to win the rematch. KUA was able to dominate much of the play in the first half but had trouble putting the ball on net. Cardigan had several strong counterattacks and Patrick Zhou made some big saves in the KUA goal including stopping a blast from about 20 yards out. Xavier Manning went into the KUA goal for the second half and made two great grabs in the opening minutes before the Wildcats could regain the momentum. Hayes Huwiler had several great opportunities up front; Alex Ussler, Alex Cohen and Noah Ramos had particularly strong games in the midfield; and all eight of the Wildcat defenders had at least one outstanding play. With roughly twenty minutes still to play Vasili Katsarakis dribbled the ball up the right side and passed to Henry Pletcher who took three steps and fired a drive past the Cardigan keeper. KUA had several more chances and the Cougars pushed hard to the end, but the final score remained 1 – 0. This was an exciting game with both teams playing with skill and determination. The crowd was big on Family Weekend, and the weather showed a bit of everything too with some light snow just before game time and sunshine at the end. And it is hard to be indifferent to pink shorts …
