KUA Students Participate in E.E. Just Symposium at Dartmouth College

On Saturday morning, November 1, Tom Lord's Inquiry to Science class traveled to Dartmouth College to participate in the E.E. Just Symposium, a multiple day workshop that brings together a group of world-renowned scientists, technologists, and Dartmouth students to engage in discussions and collaborate on topics at the frontiers of interdisciplinary scientific topics. Mr. Lord's class of ninth graders heard Dr. John Asher Johnson, Professor of Astronomy at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, speak about his discoveries of Earth-like planets orbiting around other stars in our galaxy, and listened eagerly to Dartmouth Professor Michael Casey explain the Music of Physics and how the brain interprets musical notes. The symposium celebrates the scientific courage and interdisciplinary research epitomized by Ernest Everett Just, the pioneering African American scientist and 1907 graduate of Dartmouth College and 1903 graduate of Kimball Union Academy.

Dr. Stephon Alexander, Director of the E.E. Just program and Professor of Natural Sciences at Dartmouth, introduced Mr. Lord's class to the audience, and called attention to the importance of Just's time at KUA as a critical part of the path that took him to Dartmouth and a career in scientific research. The KUA students who attended were honored to be a part of the celebration and will not soon forget the inspirational lessons they learned at the symposium.
