KUA played a formidable Tilton team today and came up short losing 44-56 on the road. Tilton scored a lay-up off the jump ball and held a slight lead until Hartland’s Becca DeTurk tied the game at 10 on a jumper from the elbow. Pressure defense by the Rams made things difficult for the Cats all afternoon. Turnovers and missed layups allowed Tilton to build a substantial lead mid-way through the first stanza, but a renewed team effort and an 8-0 run by KUA down the stretch brought the Wildcats back to within 10 points at the break (22-32).
Although KUA did a nice job containing Tilton’s posts Savannah Butterfield (1 point) and Daisy Jordan (4 points) in the first half, the Rams’ guards were hot from the perimeter throughout the game. Alex Cohen’s 16 points combined with Scheurell’s 11 helped to put the game out of reach for the KUA. Kimball Union's Co-Captain Katey Spanos played a solid game with 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 points and 1 steal despite battling a stomach virus. Gretchen Schissel, Shannon Walsh and Kaitie Sanders made positive contributions off the bench.
Despite the loss, there were some bright spots in today’s match-up – Autumn Kariuki (9 boards), Becca DeTurk (7 boards) and Fiekah Fataar (9 boards) worked hard on the glass helping to give KUA a slight rebounding advantage (34-32) in today’s matchup. The Wildcats received balanced scoring from Autumn Kariuki (12), Fiekah Fataar (9), Gabby Diaz (9) and Shannon Walsh (8). Kimball Union was whistled for just 4 fouls on the game. And most important of all, the team never stopped fighting regardless of the score.
KUA drops to 7-2 with the loss and will tip-off against Holderness on the road this Saturday.
