On Saturday, May 23 Kimball Union Academy graduated its 192nd class since its founding in 1813. 119 students commenced. Head of School Michael J. Schafer presided over the ceremonies.
Benjamin Newton of Cornish was the valedictorian, and Timothy Adams of Meriden was the Class speaker. Thomas Maher, parent of graduating senior Peter Maher and member of the Kimball Union Board of Trustees was the commencement speaker.
During the ceremonies, the following awards were presented:
Henry Mann Silver Awards - 1867 Henry Mann Silver, graduate of the Class of 1867 and donor of the Silver Gymnasium established a prize to be awarded at Commencement to those students who best exemplify the ideal of sound mind and sound body. The faculty elects three seniors to receive this Award. Each recipient has, in his or her own unique way, contributed to their school by these ideals. Each in his own right is truly deserving of the Henry Mann Silver Award. They are: Patrick Callahan, Olivia Fauver, Kasim Edebali. The Class of 1895 Award The Class of 1895, the 77th graduating class, instituted an award to be given to a member of the senior class for the attainment of high scholastic merit together with high conduct of citizenship. A model of passion, excellence and commitment with the courage of his convictions and the confidence to move hearts and minds through his expressiveness and good nature, the Class of 1895 Award goes to: Matt Burns
The Royal Burnham Townsend Class of 1911 Award Mr. and Mrs. Townsend gave this award in memory of their son who died while a student at the Academy in 1911. A memorial window in the Pope Chapel with the inscription "Remember the Lilies of the Field" also commemorates this young man. The Townsend prize is awarded each year to a senior who is most deserving because of “courtesy of conduct and cleanliness of life.” Quietly pursuing projects that benefit others, a tireless leader with a bright smile, working to improve the world around her, she is a caring and compassionate soul, The Royal Burnham Townsend Class of 1911 Award goes to: Shapreka Clarke
The Porter Award - Established in 1945 The Porter Award, given to that member of the senior class who, after the fashion of Mr. and Mrs. Porter, long-standing members of the faculty who served from 1935 - 1965, has unselfishly given time and effort to the benefit of Kimball Union Academy. Recognizing her generous spirit and gracious manner, her concern for others and the community as Student Chair of the Academy’s Honor Board, and for her quiet confidence and convictions, her elegance and her grace the Porter Award was presented to Tess Fournier. The Mikula Award – 1987 – Given in honor of the sixteenth headmaster, Thomas Mikula, who served the Academy from 1974 – 1989, The Mikula Award was established in 1987 by Allan F. Munro, Class of 1955, former Chairman of the Board, and Trustee Emeritus in honor of Mr. Mikula. Mr. Mikula was instrumental in bringing talented and deserving students from diverse backgrounds to the Academy through the ABC program – A Better Chance. Coincidentally, Mr. Mikula’s trademark legacy is his refrain, still echoing in the halls and acted out on campus today – the so-called ABC’s according to Mr. Mikula: 1) Accept the Challenge, 2) Be worthy of your lineage, 3) and Call on others to join a just cause. The following two students have seized the opportunities before them through hard work and perseverance. As proud graduates of Kimball Union today, they honor the legacy of Mr. Mikula and Kimball Union. They are: Cameron Sutton and Faith Smith
The Class of 1920 Award The Class of 1920 Award is selected by and given annually by the graduating class and awarded at Commencement to one classmate, who, in their opinion represents our values and how they would like their class to be remembered. Mastery, Creativity, Responsibility – the integrity of our mission, define this exemplary young man.
The Class of 1920 Award was given by his classmates to Ben Newton. The Charles Alden Tracy Award - Established in 1935 The Charles Alden Tracy Award is given in honor of the twelfth headmaster Charles Alden Tracy who served as Headmaster from 1905 - 1935. It is the Academy's longest standing Headmaster Award given by vote of the faculty, to the graduating senior whose character, scholarship, and citizenship best represent the ideals of the Academy. Additionally, this young man is courteous, trustworthy, and respectful. His diverse talents, compassion for others and his strong moral compass leads the way for others: The faculty is in unanimous agreement with the Class of 2009. The honor goes to Ben Newton.
