Andrew Wheating '06 Breaks 4 Minute Mile and Continues His Record-breaking season!


On April 28, 2008 Kimball Union member of the Class of 2006 and University of Oregon sophomore Andrew Wheating won the mile race at the Oregon Relays and became the first Vermonter to break the 4 minute mile, winning in 3:58:16. He was named Pac-10 athlete of the week for his efforts.

A video of the race was introduced by Andrew's KUA coach, Buz Morison, at an all school assembly - and Andrew's come-from-behind victory drew cheers and a standing ovation from the full house of students and faculty.

"Breaking the four minute mile remains one of the milestones of human achievement," said Morison, "Every nation is proud when one of its athletes accomplishes it. It is the entry point to being a world class miler."

"Andy showed the kind of dedication and commitment that it takes to achieve this kind of success while he was here at KUA," said Head of School Mike Schafer, "So we were not surprised that he would achieve something extraordinary. Our entire school community joins me in congratulating him on this momentous accomplishment."

On May 4, 2008 Andrew Wheating ran the ninth-fastest 800 in University of Oregan school history to win the the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational.

Wheating’s personal record time of 1:47.82 was the second-fastest in the Pac-10 this season, and was the best 800 time at Oregon since Simon Kimata clocked 1:46.55 in 2002.

On Friday, May 9 Andy won the 1500 meter in an Oregon Twilight track and field meet that was interrupted briefly by an appearance by Sen. Barack Obama.

Lagging on the back straight, Wheating shifted gears to the cheers of the crowd of 5,124 , winning in a time of 3 minutes, 38.60 seconds.

Wheating's time bettered the automatic qualifying standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials, is the best 1,500 run by an American this year.
