It is with sadness that I report to you the following information concerning an untimely death which occurred at the KUA campus.

On Wednesday, June 28th at approximately 7:00 PM, a participant in the MetroLacrosse program, a non-profit organization that provides free lacrosse programs across metropolitan Boston, as well as a 5-day overnight lacrosse camp at the Academy, died while participating in a MetroLacrosse-supervised swimming activity at the KUA pool.  MetroLacrosse, which is not affiliated with KUA, has held this camp at KUA for the past 2 summers.

The camper, a 13-year old male, was swimming at the KUA pool under the supervision of adult camp counselors and a certified lifeguard when he was pulled from the pool by a camp counselor who observed him in distress.  Local emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene and attempted to revive the boy.  Unfortunately, all efforts were unsuccessful and the boy was pronounced dead shortly after his transfer to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Kimball Union joins MetroLacrosse in grieving the death of this young man.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, with the campers, and with the entire MetroLacrosse organization.

We have assisted MetroLacrosse in their efforts to coordinate responses to this incident, including the gathering of grief counselors.

A service was held by MetroLacrosse in the Meriden Congregational Church this morning.  Our thanks go out to Reverend Marshall, the local police, fire, and emergency response teams in the extended Plainfield community, and the faculty and staff at Kimball Union who, when informed of the tragedy, provided support and assistance to MetroLacrosse.

Campers and staff from MetroLacrosse departed for Boston earlier this afternoon.

We will provide further information for you as it becomes available via our website.
