Lakes Region Championship

2/15 The KUA team finished strong in the Lakes Regions Championships, with gutsy performances by our racers on a long and physically challenging course. KUA hosted the race, but because of lack of snow, we held the race at Grafton Ponds on their short loop with man-made snow. This meant the skiers spent most of the race climbing, skiing 5 loops up a big hill and then down the steep, fast descent.
The Boys team finished particularly well, placing 4th in the race behind VA, Holderness and SPS, but closing the gap in points significantly, and starting to threaten for 3rd. The race showed real growth for the team, and put them anead of Putney, Proctor , NMH, Andover and Cardigan for the season. In a field of 70, KUA's scoring finishers were George Heinrichs (11th), Daniel Small (17th), Nick Powell (19th),and Davis McGraw (24th). These were followed by Pete Abdu (25th). Mike Wolf (34th), Allen Abendroth (44th), Sam Thomason (47th), Orson Webber-McCollaum, Justin Kuzma (53rd) and Matt Burns (60th)
The most drama was in the girls race, with freshman Emily Webb and Rosalie Lipfert fighting it out to be #1 for KUA, with Emily finishing 18th, less than a second ahead of Rosalie! Kalin Gregory-Davis and Lauren Lenz skied hard for 24th and 25th, and Kelly O'Leary struggled through feeling ill to finish 29th. Perhaps the most impressive finish of the day was rookie Freshman Olivia Fauver, who skied 31st, an amazing finish for having hardly ever classic skied!
