Alex '19 - Cullman Scholar at University of Oxford

Dustin Meltzer '05
Established in 1983 with a gift from Hugh Cullman '42, the Cullman Scholarship Program supports students in off-campus study opportunities. During the summer of 2018, nine scholarship recipients pursued courses of study ranging from a Spanish Language and cultural immersion in Mexico City to serving as a medical intern in Warsaw, Poland. Recently, Alex '19 gave a presentation at All School Meeting about his Cullman Scholarship interning in a lab at the Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford.

 Here's Alex:
I served as an intern in the Gull lab at the Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford. I conducted experiments on trypanosomes to determine the sequence of the genes and their respective protein association. Similar to the Human Genome Project, the lab’s mission is to identify each gene in the trypanosome genome.
Additionally, each member of the lab worked on specialized projects, focusing on specific aspects of the trypanosomes and delving into that field of study to conduct their own experiments. I had the opportunity to work with many members of the lab on these projects.
My goals for joining the lab were to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of laboratory research while expanding my knowledge of other cultures. Ultimately, my sojourn as a research assistant at Oxford was an authentic eye-opener to the exciting world of scientific research and a profoundly positive adventure.
Thank you, Alex, for sharing your experience and stay tuned for more Cullman Scholarship news.
