In a low scoring road game, some stingy defense preserved the win as KUA defeated Governor’s 2 to 1 Friday night. Although KUA carried much of the play against a talented Governor’s team, the game would be about strong defensive play at both ends of the ice.
KUA would open the scoring first, capitalizing on a power play opportunity just under 10 minutes into the game. With Governor’s pressuring the penalty kill unit, Lexi Nottke was able to get a puck through to Colleen Donohue for a quick shot and rebound which would be put away by Molly Flanagan to give KUA a one goal lead. The teams would battle through the rest of the period and the second going scoreless. Both goalies, Seana Perkins for KUA, would need to make a couple of key saves to keep it a one goal game going into the third.
Just two and a half minutes into the third, Governor’s would tie the game at 1 to 1 off of a nice goal of their own. That goal seemed to ignite the KUA team which would pepper the other team’s goalie with some great shots and scoring opportunities. It would take just 3 minutes for KUA to finally get a puck past the Governor’s goalie. Mia Brown had a shot saved and was able to get her own rebound, and move to the other side of the net for a second attempt, this one fining it’s intended target – the twine behind the goalie. Brown’s goal would prove to be the game winner and the defense would do their job the rest of the period shutting down the oppositions attempt to get back in the game.
KUA has the week off before playing again next Saturday at Proctor.
