Boys' JV1 Soccer Team Victorious in its Opener

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the KUA Boys’ JV1 soccer team travelled to the White Mountain School to play its varsity side. It was the first contest of the year and the newly assembled Wildcats team did not disappoint. They played a skillful and competitive brand of soccer and came away with a 6-4 win. The Wildcats overcame an initial challenge presented by a much smaller pitch than what the boys were used to. They implemented all of the tactics and techniques that the coaches asked them to. All in all it was a successful season opener. The first goal of the season was scored in the 2nd minute by Cory Kim ’18, who drove the ball into the low left corner after receiving a cross from Andrew Robertello ’18. In the 19th minute, Julian Erhard ’19, passed the ball to Noah Herfort ’17, who struck a long low drive into the corner. WMS answered 3 minutes later on a ricochet through ball that resulted in a break-a-way. They equalized the score in the 46th minute off of a scramble in front of the Cat’s goal. KUA responded with a determined goal by Cosku Kaplan ’16, when he beat 3 defenders for an unassisted goal. In the 56th minute, Cory Kim notched his 2nd goal after receiving a headed pass from SeHo Kim ’16. SeHo Kim wasn’t done, however, as he scored the final goal of the game from 30 yards out. Matt Burg ’17 assisted that goal with a well placed back pass to SeHo. Shortly before SeHo’s goal, Ogulcan Gorgulu ’17, scored with a nice strike after receiving a touch pass from Khenrab Norgay ’19. The backs consisting of Andre Scherding ’17, Myles Brockelman ’16, Eliot Stevenson ’17, and Ben Caron ’18, were stingy throughout the game shutting down several attempted penetrating drives. Julian Erhard ’19, Zach Wennik ’18, and Ahmed Naghi ’16, were superb in the way they controlled the midfield. Jack Clarner ’19 and Arthur Hwang ’16, created several transitional opportunities with their hustle and heads up play. Alex Plummer ’16 solidly tended the KUA goal for the full game. The boys’ next game is Wednesday at home vs. Brewster Academy.
