The KUA boys’ varsity lacrosse team lost an overtime thriller 6-5 in their season opener. Playing on what felt like the first day of spring in Meriden, Tabor quickly jumped on the Wildcats, building a 5-2 lead at the half. Andrew Jarrett and Eric Megnia scored the lone two Wildcat goals. Strong defense and solid goaltending kept the score close, as the Wildcats, despite good hustle, could not hang onto the ball. Seniors Matt Michaud and Mike Powell were key on defense, forcing outside shots while Santiago Morales, between the pipes, recorded 9 saves for the Wildcats.
KUA’s ball control improved tremendously in the second half and the Wildcats patiently mounted a comeback. Jarret scored the third and fourth goals and, with a little over four minutes remaining, JD Dudek netted the game-tying goal. Both teams had good opportunities to win in regulation.
KUA’s defensive trio, including Michaud, Chris Anderson, and Trey McDougall, stood up to the task in the Wildcats first game of the season. Ryan Lund helped KUA dominate the ground balls, recording a game high 5 gbs. PJ Tessier and Mike Robertello demonstrated grit and hustle with their hard work between the restraining lines.
KUA (0-1) scrimmages Bridgton and Holderness on Wednesday before continuing their regular season play on Saturday against the Pomfret School at Cushing Academy.
